- A Yes, the airport link tunnel is fitted with mobile phone repeaters to provide coverage throughout the tunnel.
- Q Will my car radio work in the Airport Link Tunnel?
- A Yes, the Airport Link Tunnel rebroadcast the 10 FM and 12 AM channels commercially licensed in the Brisbane Area.
- Q Why will I need to turn on my radio when I enter the tunnel?
- A Airport Link radio rebroadcast system allows the tunnel operators to communicate via car radios to drivers. This allows the tunnel operators to provide motorists with the most up to date information during an incident.
- Q How will the air quality in the tunnel monitored and maintained?
- A The Airport Link tunnel contains 141 sensors measuring the air quality throughout the tunnel. The sensors work in conjunction with the ventilation system to ensure air quality within the tunnel is below the level set by the Coordinator General.
- Q What will the speed limit in the Tunnel be?
- A 80 km/h during normal operations. This will be displayed on electronic speed signs above each lane. During an incident or maintenance activities the speed limit may be reduce for the safety of the tunnel users. Electronic speed signs will display the new speed limit, reduced speed messages will be displayed on signage external and internal of the tunnel and radio messages will be played on the radio informing drivers of reduced speed limit.
- Q How does the ventilation system work in the Airport Link Tunnel?
- A The Airport Link tunnel ventilation system consists of 170 jet fans, 27 axial fans and 3 Ventilation Outlets. In general the system works by pulling fresh air through the portals and out through the ventilation outlets.
- Q What happens if there is a fire in the tunnel?
- A Airport Link has a state of the art fire detection and suppression system. A fire can be detected in a number of ways including Linear Heat detectors, smoke detectors, Video Incident Detections and video surveillance. Once a fire has been confirmed the deluge system and smoke ventilation system will activate. The operator will activate a traffic management plan which will change signage both inside and outside the tunnel to inform motorists of the incident. Additionally inside the tunnel, radio and PA messages will be played informing motorists of what actions they may need to take.
- Q How many cameras will be in the tunnel? What are they used for?
- A Airport Link will have 571 cameras to provide coverage of the entire tunnel, approach roads and surface infrastructure. The cameras allow the Tunnel Control Room to monitor traffic in and around the tunnels. 317 of the cameras are capable of automatically detecting incidents in the tunnel and alerting the operators for a rapid response. Additionally, the cameras are used for traffic statistics and security.
