A mainly underground toll road planned between Brisbane's northern suburbs, the airport and the inner city.

Connecting the Inner Northern Busway to Bracken Ridge via Windsor, Lutwyche, Kedron, Chermside and Aspley.

A significant upgrade of the existing airport roundabout, including a new flyover, will deliver a long-term solution for reducing traffic congestion.

Why we need Airport Link?

In less than 50 years, Brisbane\'s population is expected to increase from 1.8 million to more than three million.

Our existing road network cannot accommodate the expected increase in traffic associated with this growth as more and more people travel to the inner city to access employment, commercial and administrative services, and cultural and recreational opportunities.

Every year our roads are becoming more congested during peak periods. Traffic pressures are causing delays and frustration for both motorists and public transport users, especially on major northside arterials such as Sandgate Road and Lutwyche Road.

Ongoing development of the Australia TradeCoast precinct will lead to employment and residential growth causing even more traffic. The precinct comprises 8000 hectares of commercial and industrial land surrounding Brisbane’s seaport and domestic and international airports. For more information about the precinct, visit the Australia TradeCoast website.

The consequences of doing nothing

Unless we move quickly to address traffic congestion in Brisbane, we face a range of consequences, including:

  • prolonged travel times for motorists and bus passengers
  • increased fuel costs
  • environmental degradation due to vehicle emissions
  • diminished local amenity and safety for pedestrians and cyclists
  • higher freight costs
  • constrained economic growth
  • restricted access for residents and businesses
  • emergency services delays.

What we need to do

To support sustainable population and economic growth we need to:

  • encourage a sustainable pattern of urban growth
  • increase access to public transport, especially in growth areas
  • support a balanced use of transport modes
  • integrate land use and transport planning
  • address congestion and unreliability in our transport system
  • make it easy for people to access workplaces
  • make it easy for businesses to move goods and provide services
  • provide capacity for growth.
